Has religion brainwashed us all?

A recent thread in News dealt with a woman in Italy being fined for wearing a burqa in a public place. Her husband's response was that he would henceforth be obliged to confine her to their home to ensure that no other man saw her face. Whilst many people on that thread supported her 'choice' to shroud herself from the rest of humanity, no one complained at the injustice of her enforced confinement. Are we really so indoctrinated into respecting religion that we do so even when it means accepting, and consequently condoning, a man's apparent 'right' to treat his wife so appallingly?

not us atheists (you did put 'all' in the question without any qualifications)
No....

I don't like the burka but if a woman chooses to wear it I wouldn't question her choice. It's a different matter when she has been forced to wear it.
Question Author
Well, where were they? I raised the issue, but got little response.
Question Author
This isn't about wearing the burqa, ummmm, it's about enforced confinement.
REligion was invented to subjugate the masses. It has no place in modern society when Poole are able to think for themselves.

Because she can't wear the burka....

I struggle to see how a man doesn't see a woman as an equal. I also wonder what they (the men) get from a relationship where the wifes can't have there own voice and opinions.

A woman can do a 'womans job' by staying at home and raising the family, if she chooses, but when her husband comes home from work he should respect the work she does and treat her as an equal.
Question Author
ummmm, But men like this don't see women as their equal. Far from it. One ABer who works in a dental surgery contributed to that thread and told of women being brought in by their husbands and being taken away again without treatment and in pain if there wasn't a female dentist available to treat them.
Yeah, I seen that.

I can't understand these type of men. My upbringing is so removed from that.

It's bad enough when you see a jealous husband who doesn't let his wife go out with her friends.....but to not let a woman even go to the shop unless she is covered head to toe beggars belief to be honest.
Question Author
Exactly. So why do people feel we have to respect such appalling behaviour? Why isn't every civilised, intelligent, person, openly outraged by it?
The husband sounds obnoxious, I said it then and I'll say it again.
Thats religeon though isnt it!!

"Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives..."
..........Romans 7:2

"Likewise, you wives, be submissive to your husbands..."
..........1 Peter 3:1

"As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."
..........1 Corinthians 14:34

"Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or have authority over men; she is to keep silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor."
..........Timothy 2:11
"For the wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband does..."
..........1 Corinthians 7:4

"For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman but woman for man."
..........1 Corinthians, 11:8

"Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord."
..........Ephesians 5:22

"It is well for a man not to touch a woman."
..........1 Corinthians 7:1

Christianity is an absalute disgrace!!!
Modern day Christianity just choose to ignore the parts of the Bible that doesnt suit modern day thinking and most so called Christians have no idea what the hell is even in the Bible!!!
She probably sees nothing wrong in her husband's insisting she be confined to the home and one part of me says I should respect that, especially if she's in agreement (which many muslim women would be).

I do, however, question the brainwashing that people of any religion are subject to, especially when it comes down the domination of one sex by another.

But then, I'm a free, atheist woman, brought up in a fairly liberal family, so I would think like that. And if I wouldn't tolerate any religious authority telling me how to live my life, what right have I to tell anyone else that they should accept what I believe?

Question Author
If this were the result of political dogma, or anything other than religion, we would find it totally unacceptable, and we would not hesitate to say so. However, since it's religion based, we are expected to turn a blind eye - and it seems most of us do. Look at this from the Koran.

Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other.

....good women are obedient.

As for those from whom you fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them.

The thing is, this isn't just happening in far-flung countries. It's happening here and now - and since we appear to be suffering under the delusion that religion must be respected regardless of the results of its doctrine or traditions, we are, in effect, condoning the mistreatment of certain sections of society. Why?
So what's your solution?
123everton, a few more Roman Lions would be a start :)
Question Author
Everton, The question doesn't concern solutions. It asks why people feel religion must be respected even if it results in injustice.
123everton - “So what's your solution?”

I love the 'off-the cuff' way you ask such a question. Your indifference. I can almost see you shrugging your shoulders: Hey, it's not religion that's the problem; this is not coercion - it's 'cultural' and it's her choice that she made of her own free will!

Your four word answer/question is testament to your inability to convincingly argue about this very issue. Rather than provide us with an insightful answer, you ask Naomi to provide an answer to the problem of Islamic men treating women as though they are mere possessions.

Why should she have to explain to you what the solution is to the problem of misogynistic men treating women like personal possessions? In case it has escaped your notice, 50% of homo-sapiens are female and should not be treated by their (99.999+%) genetically identical twins as an inferior race, to be subjugated by the male members of that same species because of the pronouncements made by small-minded, misogynistic, gullible, male kretins

Do you think it is reasonable that her husband should, “... confine her to [her] home to ensure that no other man [sees] her face.”?

Let me turn your question on its head as ask you – Why do you think we should put up with religious morons telling other religious morons (and those of us who do not believe) how to live our lives and conduct themselves?
