I don't know that there is a specific number of statues. I've seen statues depicting every aspect and mood of man, from laughter and sadness, to meditation and wisdom. Buddha is often depicted in three main ways: asleep, half-awake, and fully awake. These represent man's progression to the ultimate goal - Nirvana - from total unawareness, to learning, to enlightenment or Nirvana.

Dave, you're welcome. Buddhism espouses a wonderfully caring and peaceful philosophy, and if any religion comes anywhere even close to the truth, in my opinion, this is it. Please let me know how you get on with your research, won't you? I'd be very interested.
I'm not certain but the fat belly Buddhas and laughing Buddhaswe see are'nt actually an image of the Buddha but rather a certain Buddhist monk called Ho Tai, I have 2 incarnations of the Buddha one of them is known as Kwan Yin, women who want children make offerings to it, I think there are 10 overall.
