A guy I was at school with hung himself a couple of years ago. I hadn't seen him in years nor been very close but even I was devestated. He'd been such a nice bloke. It was a complete waste of a life.

It's neither right or wrong - it's never that simple.
To do it, you simply have to be desparate enough - so that death looks like an attractive alternative to your present existence - those who have been there know how that feels, those that haven't don't, and can't which is not their fault.
It is easy to blame yourself for not noticing 'the signs' of a potential suicide, but hand-in-hand with the desparation that leads to killing the pain - and that is what suicide is actually about - is the ability to hide it from just about everyone, leading to feelings of guilt and anger for those left behind.
It is tragic in all circumstances, but never simple, and never 'easy', it's just a way of killing the pain.

It is very easy to be judgemental when someone takes their own life.
Never having been in that state of mind, who knows what we ourselves would do in a horrific situation.
Maybe it is part of an illness, or it could be that events in someone's life just does not make them want to go on anymore.
I read In-A Pickle answer on this thread and I really feel for hat person.
God knows what he/she went through for whatever reason.
Families should not turn their back on you for the reason that person gave.
They ought to be trying to support their family.
My heart really went out to In-a-Pickle when I read the reply this morning.
None of us are perfect, all gone through pretty bad times, but I always say "Ther but for the grace of God go I"

As I have stated many, many times before ~ why is the idea of being selfish such bad thing?
We all partake in selfish thoughts. It is selfish of me to want the kids in bed early tonight so I can watch my favourite programme in peace.
If someone wishes to end their life then so be it ~ I find it sad that they found it necessary to come to this end, but it is their choice. As you say, leg..the people left behind are not thinking of the fact that their loved one is no longer suffering. They are being selfish, yet we condone it by comforting them.
