Went into SpecSavers about an hour ago as my reading "lens" are scratched. I am happy with the frames so I didn't want to buy a new set of frames.

I asked for "reading lens and thinned ones" - For those lens she quoted me £99.

I asked if I bought them with new frames they would be £69. How can that be?

entirely new glasses can move through the system. Customers own lenses need special treatment to ensure that they are not lost, that they are clean and still function.
Most likely the new ones are made by a machine, refurb ones by hand.
Why didn't you ask in the store, JJ?
Because of the offers... I only needed a reglaze ,when my prescription changed, again about £50 more than new ones. It's mostly a problem if they no longer stock the frame as the lenses may need to be a special order. If they are still selling that frame I would go back and suggest there is no reason to charge extra.

Assistant unhelpful. Yes my frames were from Specsavers too. I will try another day
I think the OP is saying the £69 glasses would be ALL new - including frames & lenses. Fitting new lenses to existing frames may entail more work. Time is money.

A common oversight with me - I often think after I've left a shop,"Why the heck didn't I mention such-and-such".

Woof. The frames are good. Just wanted new lens
jj - being nosey, who/what are you wearing? When I chose my latest frames last month, I hadn't realised that I'd be wearing Cuthbert on my face for the forseeable... ;-)

I think the biggest con ever has got to be 'designer' glasses - do people really think that Kylie Minogue or Donna Karen are sitting in a shed at the bottom of their garden making glasses?

There appears to be a special offer of thin lenses at the moment. They normally charge £55 on top of the cost of your frames. They always charge more to put new lenses into old frames

Yet another bubble burst!
You mean mine weren't made by a Greek Goddess!
It's not only Specsavers...most opticians really don't like putting new lenses in old frames. It involves more work as well as possible damage to the original frames, so they try to dissuade you by charging a whole lot more (and I don't blame them!).
PS - Vision Express are the best I've found!
oh and the thinner, lighter lenses may not even be suitable for the original frames.

Ok. Thanks for replies
I had new lenses put in glasses that I already had. A few weeks later the frame broke and Specsavers wouldn’t take any responsibility so I ended having to pay for new glasses.
I've just been charged £30 for the privilege of keeping my 1-yr-old frame and getting new lenses. That was Scrivens. Doesn't seem right - they must make their profit on the frames.
I wish I could get lenses for £30
