It would depend how far past the ' best before ' date it was. On most dry goods a couple of months wouldn't bother me at all. I use things at home that have crept over their ' best before ' date. I always think that as the date is often over a year ahead it's all a bit random, especially on tins which last a very long time. Wouldn't buy canned drinks as they can go flat.
I think for many people it's thrift rather than desperation that makes them buy these goods. Which is why the Poundshops and the cheaper supermarkets do well.

Both my sons ,now aged mid 30's left school and worked at the local Sainsbury's as a fill in job before embarking on their future careers elsewhere.
Both worked in 'Produce' at one stage of their time in the supermarket as well as the Warehouse.
Produce is the Fruit and Veg aisles. The manager at the time instructed the staff to take out packaged fruit and veg from the punnets/containers and add it to the loose fruit and veg on the shelves when the' Best By 'date expired.
This practice occurred over 15 years ago and I have no doubt it still goes on. We aint dead yet though

No, I wouldn't unless I had to and it's the austerity measure isn't it? Not everyone has enough money to feed their families.

I agree that hard work pays off but what if you can't actually find a job? Stoke is one of the very deprived areas in this country with the closure of the mines, steelworks and potteries and those people who are less well off are not necessarily shirkers and ne'er do wells.
