I think they have a point. This isn’t supposed to be honouring the Catholic faith, but using it as a sexualised fashion fetish.

They wouldn’t get away with do the same for Russian Orthodox, Judaism, or Islam.

It was essentially a theme based fancy dress party and the fact people ' wouldn't get away with it with other religions' is more of a problem than that this took place. You can't expect anyone to either believe in or respect other people's potential fairy tales (although personally I try not to offend anyone unless absolutely necessary), but really if the Catholic church is going to be offended then it needs to be offended by it's own brutal complacency at being the richest organisation in the world when the world is still going to hell, in some areas with their absolute assistance.
It's art dahlings, it's supposed to be 'out there'.

I'd understand the outrage if there had been shady looking sorts dressed as priests being pursued by others in police uniforms and not just some bored looking slebs in daft clothes.

The Vatican approved and assisted according to the article. If the Pope has said yes then I kind of think that closes the matter.
I agree. This event has mocked the deeply held religious beliefs of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics. There's a difference between artistic freedom and artistic licence.

I hope there aren't any serious repercussions on the organisers of this event, or on the stars who witlessly participated.

I would be very surprised if the Vatican knew what the guests were planning to wear.

...especially Rihanna.
I don't think anyone would get rianna and the pope mixed up :-)

The fragrant Riri's garb was kept beneath an umbrella ella ella of secrecy.
From the article:

//But many online commentators argued those outfits appeared to be examples of cultural appropriation.

The accusation comes in the wake of a high-profile argument that erupted after a teenager wore a traditional Chinese dress to her school’s prom. One response on Twitter – which read: “My culture is NOT your *** prom dress” – has been retweeted more than 40,000 times.//

That's a good one, isn't it? The "My culture" tweet presumably written by somebody wearing T-shirt, jeans and trainers, using a computer quite probably made[i in China, but most certainly not [i]invented] there.

"It was essentially a theme based fancy dress party".

Well, if "cultural appropriation" is a new secular sin (and it seems it is), that'sf Kvalidir's fancy dress parties out, isn't it?

Kvalidir's
///The Vatican not only gave permission for the theme, but also provided a whole host of clothes and other items for the accompanying exhibition.
The Met and the Vatican worked together for more than a year to procure more than 40 items for the event, and curator Andrew Bolton was even given access to the hidden chambers where nuns look after the pope’s clothes.///

So why all the fuss?

Baldric that's what I said too
Takes the spotlight off Cardinal Pell for a while too. Win win.

In which case I applaud it totally.

All religions, and anyone stupid enough the believe in them, should be mocked mercilessly at every available opportunity. Religion should never be 'respected'; it should only be reviled and, ultimately, destroyed.

No - the Vatican helped with the exhibition, not the fancy dress of those attending.

The Met is a museum and as such hosts a massive celebrity party in May each year. The Church only helped with the citation of the exhibits.
As a Catholic I would be being hypocritical if I criticised this year's event - I haven't criticised their choice of themes in the past.

I don't think all of the outfits look good but it's ephemeral and will pass.

SP, I am only quoting the Link that you Provided, if you disagree with it choose your Links more carefully then, tell them, not me.
Isn't mimicry a form of flattery ? Appropriation indeed (rolls eyes). Why should anyone care ? Is the believers' faith that weak ? Maybe we should bring in the death penalty for blasphemy while we're about it. Some folk need to get a grip. Arty farty folk do daft things like dressing up. They can't help it; it's in their nature.
it is just fancy dress for the rich! Who cares?
