and he appeared in today's world, what would he make of today's Christians, their big elaborate churches and cathedrals, the pope and the Vatican and all their wealth etc...
I would imagine he would probably collapse in tears!

Goodlife, if you need spiritual fear to prevent you from compromising basic human principles of right and wrong, I feel very sorry for you.

Jesus claimed to be the son of God - the living progeny of the creator of the entire universe. That's a big claim by any measure. And one that is not supported by any substantiate evidence whatsoever.
All of the 'miracles' apparently performed by Jesus are anecdotal. Not a shred of proof exists for any one of them. Turning water into wine? Anecdotal. Feeding the 5000? Anecdotal. Raising Lazarus from the dead? Anecdotal and monumentally stupid: even if one were to truly believe that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, not one question was asked of Lazarus about the state of being dead. This is an absolutely astonishing omission. Lazarus could have been the one and only person ever in the history of mankind to give us a glimpse into the afterlife but instead he is simply left to wander off - no questions asked. Readers of the bible can only conclude that such deep questions are beyond the understanding of us mere mortals.
I am of the opinion that Jesus (ie. the biblical account of the man) didn't exist. He is an archetype - someone to look up to and aspire to be. But a real person? No. If he were, he would have been written about in the contemporary texts of the time. His existence would have been widely documented in Roman texts... but it wasn't. His death was, according to scripture, accompanied by earthquakes and a three hour darkness that descended during the day: nothing of which is recorded in any historical document.
While writing this I am reminded of the news reports broadcast by the state of North Korea on the death of Kim Jong-il whose death was apparently coincidental with strange events...

All propaganda and all false.
If the biblical Jesus did exist and were he to return, he would probably drop dead in despair at what has been made in his name.
