I would love to have a faith, but these are some of the contradictions and difficulties I can't sort out. Help would be appreciated

RC and Muslim friends in particular are confident that they are following the "true path" and that everyone else is wrong.

In world war 1, priests on each side told the soldiers that "God is on your side"

Hundreds of religions promised life after death only if you were of their particular faith. For instance, Egyptian Pharoahs went to extraordinary lengths to ensure this.. were they successful, or was the religion one of the best con tricks of all time?

When the dodgy popes sold indulgences, did the purchasers get what they paid for?

I could go on, but you should have the idea by now...

Straight factual answers would be good, not copy & pasted chunks of gunge...

//Beckersjay, when non-believers confront beliefs that are demonstrably false, they do have the monopoly on wisdom.//

The key word ^ there ^ being 'demonstrably'. Total knowledge is a pipe dream, but provided with enough knowledge to demonstrate the falsehood of an assertion one can through reason reveal that the monster hiding behind the smokescreen of uncertainty is merely an allusion unwoven from the fabric of doubt by the courage to pull the thread from which it has been fashioned.
You could always just start your own religion.

You'd make a fortune, if nothing else.
Venator, if you want to have faith, at least have it in something like reason and logic. But perhaps you do already which is why you do not find it in yourself to have faith in religion.
The biggest obstacle to logical thinking is the incalculable damage organised religion does when indoctrinating young children, inculcating a virtuaslly impossible to remove feeling of guilt and fear.
And I am virtuaslly p1ssed!

Bring on mama's late night song thread!
Wrong section. You need Chatterbank - but I just checked and I don't think Mama's arrived yet.

Night night - I was going to say 'sleep tight' - but perhaps not. ;o)

jomifl, venator already has - check out the Ab Editor thread....
Sorry but if you are on a site looking to have a faith it's the wrong place to look.
No one can tell you what faith you should have it should come naturally !
I'm not religious but this post to me seems like a joke, I'm guessing you're
only young and hope you will find what you need eventually.
↑ “... I'm not religious but this post to me seems like a joke...”

You are clearly new here. If that's all you can muster in response to a very good question about the morality of organised religion then I would politely suggest that you are already in way over your head.
-- answer removed --
But the OP isn't saying it's a "question about the morality of organised religion", the OP is saying "I would love to have a faith". I didn't think that Pizza's answer sounded like they were in way over their head.
Its very easy. RC are not following the book they believe in. And I can give many examples. Although I (and many Christian Scholars too) do not believe present Bible to be all word of God but still if they start following certain verses they will be Muslims and not Christians.
Are you going to divulge these 'certain verses' or are we all 'damned to hell' in a manner of speaking.
Keyplus,// but still if they start following certain verses they will be Muslims and not Christians. //

I was going to say ‘It’s the old question. What came first – the chicken or the egg? – and sadly for you, Keyplus, Islam is the chicken’ ….

…..but I wouldn’t want to confuse you. Suffice to say the bible existed long before Islam was invented, so any connection between the two emanates simply from Mohammed’s plagiarism of earlier works from earlier cultures. Wishful thinking on your part, without doubt, but nonetheless utter nonsense. Do yourself a favour – before putting finger to key – think – and stop listening to men who are talking out of their backsides!
venator; //I would love to have a faith,// What have you so far done about it?
Naomi - You will never understand. Because you never try to. So here are (ONLY) few things for others to ponder.

1 - Christianity, Judaism came before Islam then why Muslims respect Moses (pbuh) and Jesus (pbuh)more than their (supposed to be ) real believers. Have you ever seen a Jew or Christian putting PBU (peace be upon him/them)?

2 - Muhammad could not read or write still he managed to copy things from previous books including Bible (OT & NT), Greek studies, and all of what was there before his time. He did not travel that much, Arabic Bible was not available until centuries after him; he did not have computer, USB sticks, and many more things. Still he managed to copy only what would be proved correct centuries after and left out illogical things. So perhaps you can try doing this in this age.

3 - He managed to write (or according to you copied) a book that is read and believed in by billions (whether you like it or not) still he did not write his name on it as an author and therefore did not claim any credit for it. Show me one person in modern history who would do that?

4 - In the book he (copied according to you) he talked about a woman (Marry or Mariyam) as chosen best among the all of the women in the world and he named a whole chapter in her name. Why did he not put his own mother's name there? And people who believe in that woman's son as son of god has her hardly mentioned in their book let alone naming a whole chapter to her. And then according to them Muhammad was an enemy (and still is) so why he gave that much respect to the mother of someone he is supposed to be the enemy of.

I can list many more but I know in the end few would say ( as an escape route) that they do not even believe in Bible so why waste time? And for you and few others nothing will ever make any difference. Because Allah told about few people in the very beginning of the Quran,

2:6 As to those who reject Faith, it is the same to them whether thou warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe.

2:7 Allah hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their eyes is a veil; great is the penalty they (incur).

And as usual, this is all I had to say on this thread, now you can say whatever as nothing will be that I wouldn't have heard before. And then of course you like your name on the last post on every thread so there you go.

Well, this has got nowhere fast!

Plenty of advice to suspend logic and listen for the little voices, of course.

A certain amount of inter faith squabbling.

Answers to questions - zilch!

Go on someone - answer one of the Op posers - In world war 1, priests on each side told the soldiers that "God is on your side" --- was he?
Muslims and RCs are right in as far as "everyone else is wrong". Pity they don't take just that tiny step further.
Was He? No. Why would anyone thinks so?
Re the Book of the Dead, biggest con? Are we using head count? Then start with RCs, go on to Islam.
Did they get? No.
//Muhammad could not read or write still he managed to copy things from previous books including Bible //
Classic Keyplus
//2:7 Allah hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their eyes is a veil; great is the penalty they (incur).//
Too right keyplus, you would know all about that.
