The Brethren

I have had a look around and can really only find stuff on Wicipedia so wondered if anyone can help.

There is a kid a school who has to have his lunh in the school office as because he is from The Brethren he can't eat in front of other people.

I was wondering a couple of things and hope that someone can help.

1. Why can't they eat in front of other people?
2. Is it just in front of those not in belonging to their church or everyone including other Brethren?

Only one reference to eating and that was with those that have been withdrawn from?

Perhaps also to not associating with those not of the Brethren!! But that would preclude the children going to mainstream school!!!

These are the Plymouth Brethren. There are two sects, the Open and the Exclusive Brethren. The Exclusive are a smaller sect and one of their tenets is not to sit at table with those who are not one of them, basing this on a text from St James's epistle. It just seems odd that they send the child to school but not allow him to eat with the other children. He eats in the school office with the office staff eating their lunch !!
