I said this the other day to someone and they took serious offense at it. I have said this loads of time sort of as a joke based on the two different sayings, "Is the Pope Catholic" and "Does a bear Sugar in the woods". Admittedly that was the first person to take offense but I was shocked at their reaction. Seriously, does anyone else find that an offensive thing to say?

No. Not at all. He must broccoli somewhere.
^^^ For broccolli read krap
A devout Catholic would find that offensive - and as with anything you say anywhere, you have to match your language and choice of output to your company - it's a mark of maturity and courtesy.

If you inadvertently offend someone, the polite reaction is to apologise and move on, rather than try and take issue with their offence and its rights and reasons.
no not in the vatican just on everybody else!!!
Not offensive. Where else is the Pope gonna poop?
I agree with Andy

I did say sorry, but there was definite tension after it.
In the presence of devout catholics just say 'is a bear catholic' and let their brain work it through.
I'm not surprised. You should weight up the crowd first before saying such comments.
It is a well known, proven, fact that the Pope, like our Queen, does not sh1te. Full Stop. They have no need of such actions.
I often use the phrase "does the Pope sh1t in the woods"and have never had an angry reaction from catholics or otherwise.
I can't imagine why anyone, catholic or otherwise, should find it offensive (unless they were offended by the word sh1t itself). No more offensive than "Does the Pope wear a dress?" or "Does the Pope condone and conceal paedophilia?". In each case the simple answer is "Yes".
I am not prepared to be drawn into debate but I do find this, and other threads of similar nature, deeply offensive.

As always, humour, and its subjects, are highly subjective - one man's offence is another man's humour.
Anyone who actually "takes offence" at something which is said in innocent jest is, themselves, being offensive to the feelings of the person who made the comment.

It is they, not the person who made the comment, who should apologise for causing offence.
I remember many years ago being told that if ever life seemed unremittingly grey with nothing to smile at, just imagine the Queen taking a dump at Buck House.
"I'm sorry, I'm just a bit over-sensitive" ... would be sufficient.
