Why half day closing in the old days? And do certain places still do it? It used to be Wednesday afternoons in Old Swan, Liverpool Town....perhaps still is.

its half day thursday in ilfracombe.
I think it is wednesday as thursday is traditionally market day and you needed the half day to travel to market
this is also the reason why elections are held on a thursday

The reason which I have read for why elections are on Thursdays is because Friday is payday, so therefore by Thursday you can be sure that the peasants have already spent their week's money on beer and have sobered up enough to be able to vote responsibly.
It is half day closing on Wednesday in Garforth, West Yorks.
