HC is correct here....its gesture politics, of the worst type.

Whether women wear bikinis and "burkinis" isn't going to make anyone in France one iota safer.
I'm very fat. I can assure you that the French would pay me to change out of my bikini and into a burkini. It would take me weeks to squeeze my 'curves' into a wet suit.

Some people really do have to keep their skin covered, if they've had skin cancer, for example, but still enjoy the beach and swimming. This sort of outfit would be perfect.
I recall Nigella Lawson wearing one
Islay, my suggestion was a serious one. If the burkini is outlawed and women want to cover up they need to find an alternative. Unless the object of covering up is to demonstrate adherence to Islam, a wetsuit provides an alternative. They needn’t be tight either. Bigger sizes are available.
I wonder if the irony of western supporters of this nonsense bleating on about the 'slavery' of Muslim women's dress, reaches them?
"They don’t need to employ religious symbolism".

Correct, Naomi. Ladies, go to a beach in a Muslim country, wear a bikini and see how much they will tolerate our western symbolism. You'd be lucky to get off with a £35.00 fine, or whatever it was. You'd be thrown in jail. Maybe even stoned to death

The bikini isn't western symbolism, or any kind of symbolism for that matter.
Question Author
Well, I have worn a bikini in Egypt, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Maldives, Mauritius, Malaysia, Tunisia, and Bintan Island and nobody gave a stuff.
There's a great piece by David Aaronovithch in the Times satirising this.
I won't post a link as it's behind a paywall but it begins thuslyL

"What item of beachwear do you think would be incompatible with British values? As a serious proposition the question seems absurd, so you’d probably reply that those half-thongs worn by male members of an Essex-based reality TV show a couple of years back came pretty close."

This is the great victory of the religious fundamentalists: some of us are unwittingly becoming just like them.
