Naomi -then you are less well read on Religion than you presume to be. A few religions/belief systems actively encourage people to question their abilities and strive to be the best person they can. Some don't, but to Tar every Religious belief with the same brush is rather doctrinaire.

Please elaborate.
"The lady [or in this case gentleman] doth protest too much, methinks"
All men are cremated equal.

Naomi -Budhism, Unitarians, Pagans sorry that's just off the top of my head, work is getting in the way. BTW I'm a pagan and at no time has anyone ever told me to do something or to believe in something,in fact its the total opposite. The only rule that has ever been made clear to me was the Wicca Rede which you may have more time than me to past copy then discuss .
I'm with Retro; The Buddha told not to blindly follow what he said but to assay his words "like a goldsmith assays gold";

"My teaching is not a philosophy. It is the result of direct experience...
My teaching is a means of practice, not something to hold onto or worship.
My teaching is like a raft used to cross the river.
Only a fool would carry the raft around after he had already reached the other shore of liberation.

If you were to follow the Dharma [the teaching]purely out of love for me or because you respect me, I would not accept you as disciple. But if you follow the Dharma because you have yourself experienced its truth, because you understand and act accordingly - only under these conditions have you the right to call yourself a disciple..."

Retrochic...you are a Pagan ? Really !
mikey yes really -though I never knew what it was called until I was about 18. One of my grandma's was a 'herbalist' and followed the seasons of the year, celebrating this and that at certain times. She was also the most kind nonjudgmental person I've ever known. I just do my thing, people call it Pagan beliefs I call it appreciating nature and the world and working with it rather than against it.
OK retrochic ! I had visions of you dancing naked, in Stonehenge every summer, thats all !
As in the words of Fleetwood Mac -I would 'keep your visions to yourself ' lol! Sorry but StoneHenge in June is far too cold for me to go skyclad lol!
Khandro thanks for the link but it just takes me to the book depository on Amazon -was there a particular book you thought I may be interested in?
Matrixneo - can you confirm what it is you are ingesting - and where it is available please?
more than likey you can buy it in B&Q Andy.
Retro; Sorry, the book you might like is called 'The Watercourse Way' by the very great Alan Watts. (RIP) I was Prompted to point to it after your mentioning about going with nature rather that against its flow, which is what Tao is all about. - Really recommend it.
Khandro -thank you -I'm starting meditation classes at a Buddhist centre this Thursday so I will get this book to read on my kindle.
Retrochic, like all religions, those you mention teach that adherence reaps reward of some description.
