I've just had a phone call from a very helpful lady offering to sort out the error messages and malware on my computer.
Yesterday a text message telling me I am entitled to £3,750 in unclaimed compensation.
Can elderly and vulnerable people be protected from these scams?

Anybody can be protected from them by using a common sense.
Yes - but only if the useless Ofcom (motto - "Proud to be as effective as a chocolate fireguard") gets tough with the telecom companies and requires them to stop transmitting this garbage.

Stopping spam calls and texts from being delivered isn't easy - but is possible.

The snag is that the telecom companies (BT in particular, but also Vodafone and the mobile networks) make money by transmitting this junk. So they will just wring their hands and do nothing until it hurts them in the pocket.

Implement huge fines for delivering junk texts, spam calls - end of problem as (magically) the 'too difficult' problems get sorted.
Just delete Sibton, do not tkae the bait.
I get loads sibton, and put them to my spam folder. Some of them are messages from services I use O2 etc asking me to reply to them to activate a new account or confirm my address. I also delete those wonderful offers from Nigeria asking me to give them my bank account details for the $100,0000 coming my way.
Question Author
I always ignore or delete but wondered how they could be stopped.
It's the same old maxim. If it sounds too good to be true-then it is.
I received notification from Canada some time ago saying I had won thousands of dollars in a raffle I had not even entered and asking for about £30 'admin fee' to release it.
I wrote back saying I was out of work at the time and could not afford £30, (true), and authorising them to take the £30 out of the money I had won.
Surprise, surprise. I never heard from them again.
The only way to get rid of these vermin who prey on vulnerable people is to beat them at their own game.
