As a child my mother sometimes called me Christopher, but more often called me John, until I eventually persuaded her that I'd prefer to be called Chris. My junior school teachers called me Christopher but my secondary school teachers only ever used my surname.
My father, however, used multiple names for me, which all started with a dropped H. (So I was 'ubert', 'umphrey', 'arry', 'erbert' or whatever else came into his mind. Unless he was referring to me in the third person he never used my real name throughout my childhood!)
In the meantime, from the age of 10, most of my friends knew me as 'CJ'. That continues to be the case, and is actually what I prefer to be called. (It was also one of the nicknames that the kids had for me when I was teaching)
However (before banks got so fussy about proving your identity when you open a new account), I've also had bank accounts as Martin, Frank and Paul.

Oh, I've just remembered:
The only time that forenames were used at secondary school were in Spanish lessons, where we were known by the Spanish equivalent of our English names. But the teacher would only allow a name to be used once in the same class and there was another 'Cristobal' so, for 5 years, I had to be 'Paco' ;-)

My christian name is the same as my dads,so the family always called me by another common version of the same name. When I started work in '66 i turned up in the workshop as a brand new 15 year old apprentice and introduced myself to the shop foremen ( in those days Gods right hand man). I told him my name and he replied "there's only one of those in this workshop and thats me" and thats why today, nearly 60 years later all my family call me one thing and everybody else calls me another name
