Recently, while off the coast of north Barcelona, I saw a building in the city very similar in shape to the Gherkin (but without the lozenge shaped appearence). Was this also designed by Sir Norman Foster. If not which came first?

I have no idea, but Antonio Gaudi is responsible for some very bizarre, surreal buildings in Barcelona. I think they are beautiful (though I've only seen photos) but they wouldn't be to everyone's taste.
No, I think it is Torre Agbar (inspired by Gaudi). Architect : Atelier Jean Nouvel. http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=100200
Also I found (but don't think it's that) : Edifici Tarragona.

Thanks for your responses, but I don't think we've got the answer yet. It's some distance north of the city centre -- some miles. It bears a remarkable resemblance to the Gherkin but has square panels rather than diamond shapes, and without the helter-skelter appearance. I was travelling by ship to Barcelona Forum 2004, so it's between that site and the city. I think I know all the Gaudi sites and I'm sure it's not inspired by him, it's far too recent and geometric and unlike anything he has done. What I was interested in is whether this building inspired the Gherkin or vice versa.
According to fosterandpartners.com it's not one of his. If you do a google search for "edificios barcelona" and click on Images on the list above the line you will get pics of Barcelona buildings. I can't see your "gherkin" there, but there is a pic of the Forum 04 site.
