It's probably too simple, but htey are all cities and they all have universities
Cathedrals ?
I don't think Gloucester has a university per se, it has one or two of the colleges affiliated to the University of Cloucestershire, but that is mainly based in Cheltenham.

As for cathedrals, York's is a Minster not a cathedral and it differs from the rest because it has an archbishop, not just a bishop.

I thought it might be something to do with Roman names, not sure though.
Hi Sue, a query not an answer..... is there a reason why you have put Exeter CITY, which is a football club, and not the City of Exeter, the City of Liverpool, the City of York ...etc. which is normal terminology in this country?

Hi Vicasso
There were five questions to answer and then one had to get the connection between them. Four were straight cities and Exeter City was a football club. I included the word City as that may be the part of the answer that is in the connection as opposed to Exeter. Hope this makes sense!
