I believe it was an eccentric british commando called "Mad" Jack Churchill. He served with the 2nd Manchester Regiment and the British Expeditionary Force. Whilst with the BFO he regularly carried a longbow and arrows and apparently killed a guard with them whilst on an operation. As I recall he was also one of those officers who took his duty to escape very seriously and was forever breaking out of camps. I've got a book on him somewhere, a very good read.
p.s the longbow killing took place during WWII
Although that isn't the only person to have used a longbow during WWII... but since this is a GBQ prize quiz question I won't say any more until after the deadline of the quiz. Good luck!
