I won't ask why yellow lines are frequently added to roads, but never seem to be taken away....that's too tricky.....but WHEN did single and double yellows first appear on our roads? Which Transport Minister was responsible for this innovation?

Late 60's early 70's If memory serves me correctly.
Yellow lines were introduced in London in late 1958. The Minister for Transport & Civil Aviation at the time was the Rt Hon Harold Watkinson MP ( Con. Woking ) who, the following year went on to become Sec. of State for Defence.
