Aah, a fellow Metro reader!!
Could it be that S and NE are used for other places? There is fairly intelligent life outside London!
Ewood27 is right -- S is for Sheffield and NE for Newcastle.
Not just Newcastle - NE is for Jarrow, Hebburn, South Shields, Gateshead etc. In fact, North East - Surprise? Do Londoners really believe that the UK starts and ends in London?
Joshua_R: No, Londoners are just quite arrogant about where they come from - I know because I am one, who now lives elsewhere. The thing is, 1 in 6 people in the UK live there, and it truly is of a scale and tempo that simply doesn't occur elsewhere in the UK, irrespective of what city-dwellers elsewhere might think. This said, I prefer where I live now because the quality of life is higher.

It was just a question, and no- I was not casting dispersions on the rest of the UK, I was simply unaware that the same 'form' of postcode was used elsewhere- so please LOOSE THE CHIP!
Thanks, lisaj. Spent a decade in London myself ( 1974-1975!) I never did figure out what there was to be arrogant about.
It's a long time since my 'A' level maths years, but as far as I can recall the equation goes something like this : ( Scale + tempo ) is inversely proportional to quality.
