Would you recommend I go to Barcelona (for a special occasion weekend break)  at the beginning of October - is the weather still warm?  And would you recommend I book through an agent, or independently - I was thinking of booking a hotel and flight and getting a cab from the airport .. any suggestions?  We would like to stay as near to the centre of town as possible.

I went to Barcelona in early March and would recommend it as a special weekend break.  I booked with hotel and flights through Expedia, but you won't need a cab from the airport as there is a metroline that goes straight from airport to the centre of Barcelona by Les Ramblas where you can get to other locations.  We stayed at Hotel Ingleterra just off Les Ramblas - ideal for metro links to other areas and easy walking distance for places to eat.  Would recommend a meal at Casa Calvet for a very special occasion - food and service were excellent.  Hope this helps.

I agree with Walkleycarol, I took my husband there for his 30th, we had a great time. (late Sep) so Oct should be warn. There are tons of good places to stay to suit all budgets. I also wouldn't bother with the taxi as their tube system is good. Word of warning tho, Barcelona is well known for it's pick pockets so just keep everything close to you and zipped up! Beach and Shopping are fab and I would recommend an open top bus tour to see the City properly. Have a great time!
