I am trying to discover if an accident that occurred in 1972-73 would have been recorded in the two local papers at the time . Do newspapers carry archives this long , or might I be better off looking in local libraries ?

I'd try your library Flump. We keep the local papers back as far as 1859, and it's really easy to look them up.

I went once or twice to the newspaper archives at colindale.
