Prom Dress

01:02 on Sun 13/Feb/05

It is my school leavers prom in June and I'm looking for a dress. It needs to be quite formal but as it's in the summer I'm looking for something a bit different to a 'little black dress'!

See www.alfredangeloprom.com for the kinda thing I'm looking for (am I allowed to use a link?)...but they don't ship outside of the USA so they're no good.

I know they do some good dresses in high-street stores but I don't really want the same dress as someone else so I'm not too keen on Debenhams, Monsoon etc. Maybe hiring is a possibility?

Basically, does anyone have any advice on where I could look? It would be expecially good if you knew any online retailers. All advice appreciated though!

since you have plenty of time till your ball, i recommend popping into tkmaxx every few weeks on the off-chance, i picked up a fantastic dress from there the other week for 30. it's lovely, but i'm just keeping it as my back-up dress for now. i do suggest trying it though, most of the dresses will be awful but every now & then there'll be a fantastic one

good luck!

(10:32 on Mon 14/Feb/05) Depends how much money you're looking to spend & how creative you are... I bought a pattern & some fabric & got a dress maker to make my perfect dress.... if you're any good with a sewing machine you could try doing it yourself... guarenteed no one else will be wearing the same dress :-)

Since when do we have school leavers proms in the UK? Is this a new thing, or are you at an American school?

If you don't have as much talent with a needle as Fairy does, then buy a cheapish dress that looks fairly similar to what you want, and accessorise it with lace, sequins, fabric flowers etc.

Have a wonderful prom... whatever you wear!

paris redd, i know exactly the problem you're talking about - i think there's a 'gap in the market' for online prom dresses that actually deliver to the UK becuase I've spent hours looking online with no luck!

(16:06 on Wed 23/Feb/05) I got my prom dress from a vintage clothes store, and it's fab.  The retro/vintage look is really popular at the moment, but genuine vintage is harder to come by, so have a look around.  If you get a dress this way, no one will be wearing the same one!

(17:19 on Sun 27/Feb/05) why dont you try getting one made for you? it doesnt have to be very expensive, i am in teh same position as you, i want a dress that is a bit different and am not so keen on the debenhams or monsoon ones. http://www.dessygroup.co.uk/ have lots of evening dresses, and i was surprised by the prices, as i was expecting them to be much more expensive. i hope this helps.
