Back in October I bought a Jumper from Madhouse for my fiance for Christmas. When I got home, I put all my christmas present purchases from that day into the cupboard in the bags I bought them in.
This weekend, when I came to wrap them all up I took the jumper out of the bag and found that it still had the security tag on it.
I have searched everywhere for the receipt but I must have accidentally thrown it out at the time of buying the item. I now dont know what to do. If I was to walk into the shop with it, still in the bag I bought it in and explained the situation, would they think I was a theif and make me pay for it again or call the police or take it away from me? Am I being foolish to think that they would just take the tag off for me with out me providing a receipt?

Your advice would be grately appreciated

Dont worry about it

But I still want to give it to my fiance for christmas, I cant give it to him with the tag on it.
can you not break it off?
Apparently, you can remove them by using strong magnets
If you paid by credit or debit card take your staement in, they can then see proof of purchase if they want to, but I would ring the store first, ask toi speak to the manager and explain what has happened and arrange to call when they are in to get it removed, what sort of tag is it? if it is a dye one put the jumper in the freezer in a pastic bag and when the dye is frozen you cabn cut it off with metal cutters, if it is a magnetic one then you need to but a magnet, a strong one.
If you paid by cash and know how much the item cost, you could always send a postal order to the shop, with a covering letter, explaining what it's for, and why. That way, no one need know who you are, and you won't have a guilty conscience.

IceMaiden I am confused - Why would I want to pay them again for it? If I had to do that, I might as well just buy another one.

Dot.hawkes, good idea about the statement if I paid by card, although I have a horrible feeling that was one occasion I didnt use me debit card and gave them cash! oh no! I wil go have a look at my statment now. Otherwise, I will do as you suggest and ring them to explain the situation.

Even if you paid by credit card that proves you paid for a jumper exactly like that one. It doesn't prove that you did not steal that particular one.

Excellent advice about telephoning the store manager.
this happened to me once, I gave my grandson a pair of pyjamas from Sainsburys Savacentre, they forgot to take off the tag, the alarm did not ring when I left so I didnt know, the family pulled my leg for weeks ! I didnt want to go back and go through all the hassle of whether they believed me or not, it took my family 20 mins to remove the tag, they eventually smashed it with a hammer.

Hi All,
Just thought I would update you. I have checked my bank statement and I paid for the jumper using my debit card - Horrah!

Also, have just rung the shop and the Asst manager said to bring it in in the carrier bag and they would look at it and remove the tag.

So fingers crossed!

Thanks for all your advice.
