On a supermarket reciept, why do some items have an asterix after them?

Different supermarkets might, of course, attribute different meanings to symbols on their receipts (or simply not use any symbols at all).

However, I've just taken a look at a Tesco receipt and, as far as I can tell from the limited evidence of one receipt (with a total of �11.99 on it), it seems that an asterisk appears alongside any item where the price includes VAT.

I think its tax exempt items, like certain toiletries or milk etc.
