White teeth in Hollywood 1940

Does anyone know what stars did to get their teeth so white in hollywood in the forties? they didn't have anything like the products and the laser teeth whitening and cosmetic dentistry like we do nowadays, so i was just wondering if they painted them or something if they didn't have veneers or caps - like with a white pen - same as they use a black pen to black out a tooth.

I read that a lot of them scrubbed their teeth with salt or harsh abrasives which caused them problems later in life!
