where can i find alum powder in the uk, this is for a nursery school project which allows you to make self hardening salt dough,(no oven equired)

Most chemists shops sell alum powder but I recommend phoning first to avoid the possibility of a wasted journey. (You're more likely to meet with success at a traditional, independent shop rather than the pharmacy counters in superstores).
