Can anyone recommend a portable audio recorder/player?

Can anyone please recommend a good/high quality portable, self-contained stereo audio recorder/player? I need one to take along to rehearsals of small ensembles in various locations at which I can record short duration live 'performances' and then replay these more or less instantly to the performers for learning-from-listening purposes.
I am not seeking recording studio technical standards. I have a very good quality microphone but I do not wish to cart around a mixer unit, recorder, amplifier, speakers, cables, etc.
40 years ago I would have used a good quality stereo tape recorder such as my trusty old Tandberg reel-to-reel machine which had adequate sound output. A microphone was the only extra piece of equipment needed. Life was uncomplicated then!
Is there a modern-day equivalent portable unit? I should prefer one using MiniDisc as the recording medium, but high quality audio cassette would also be acceptable, as would recordable CD. (DAT would be over-the-top). Manual control of the recording level is essential.
A good quality high-powered 'ghetto blaster' which includes a stereo microphone socket for recording on to MD or cassette might be acceptable. Or one with MD playback would also be acceptable because I have a portable (Walkman-type) MD recorder.
I never seem to see anything in the stores these days which might fit the bill. Nowadays, so-called recorders/decks (and amplifiers) don't have microphone sockets and seem designed merely to record radio or copy CDs, etc, so any help would be gratefully received.

Could you not use your MD recorder with some powered speakers? I'm sure there's cheaper and/or better ones than this, they're just one of the first ones I found.
For a recording device (other than an MD), I could suggest an iRiver H340 which has a stereo line in and line out and can record in MP3 at up to 320kbps. You can adjust the recording level, but it is done through a menu, so is best set once and left.
There are some miniature audio recorders available in the market that you can make use of. you can store some crystal clear audio in them an play them back with no issue. But it is always recommended to go for a full sized audio recorder for better results. Anyway you can find some more information here http://
