a leaflet fell out of my sunday paper yesterday and solved my whole Xmas present dilemma as well as easing my conscience regarding the extremes of poverty elsewhere in the world. Basically u gift goats, school meals, even toilets to third world countries on behalf of whoever you would have bought a present for. Its difficult to explain but they have a website, check it out I think it's a great idea - www.oxfamunwrapped.com

yeah seen the goat one, thats a good system . . . unless they eat it :-s

I wish I could see their faces on Christmas morning when they find out you've spent the money for their present on a goat for a third world family. Ho ho ho!

Try wearing THAT down the pub!

we did this at work last year instead of a secret santa. The 10 we'd have bought pressies with went to buy a herd of goats and 3 healthcare professionals for a year in India.

It's a lovely idea, but most of my friends/relatives would be really ****** off if I spent the money on a goat for someone else! I am quite into adopting animals for younger family members though. They get a nice cuddly toy and it will hopefully spark an interest in conservation and the world around them. After all, it's not like they need any more playstation games...
i can just see my little nephews face on xmas morning when he's expected lego fails to arrive and he looks at me all innocently, tears in his eyes and asks " whats this crap?"

I think this kind of charity giving for adults (in lieu of an unwanted or unneeded present which subsequently ends up in the charity shop) is an excellent idea, although I guess most children are too immature to realise how materially well off they already are. For conservationists, another good idea is donating an Acre of Rainforest for 25 via the World Lane Trust. (www.worldlandtrust.org)
