aelmpvw...maybe it wasn't her turn that day that the portrait painter turned up !
Its not entirely true that polygamy isn't still practised....spins-offs of the Mormons are still committing bigamy and the American Government doesn't seem terribly interested in prosecuting unless there is any child abuse involved. But the genetic problems associated with polygamy must have been huge...in-breeding seems too small a word to use.

Mikey, these are not bigamous marriages and I'm not entirely sure where some of the information you post here as fact comes from, but it's highly unlikely that the US government would prosecute anyone for living with a number of people out of wedlock, which is in effect, what those who practise polygamy are doing - a lifestyle no longer condoned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, aka the Mormons.
Incidentally, the term is mothers-in-law, not mother-in-laws.

Naomi...polygamy is still widely practised by breakaway Mormon groups in Utah and neighbouring States. As the marriage ceremonies are conducted by themselves, they are married in their eyes. Every now and then, the authorities act, as there are underage girls involved. But the State and the Government are far from quick to take action, as they fear another Waco situation. American is full of weirdo religions, although not all of them do as much harm as these breakaway Mormon groups.
You are deliberately misreading my point Naomi. Of course it is unacceptable to the official Mormon Church ! It was a condition of Statehood that they stopped the practise. So they are hardly going to change their minds now are they ?
But here are many breakaway Mormon sects where polygamy is widely practised. They consider themselves just as Mormon as the official Church of Latter Day Saints. There have been several accusations about child abuse within some of these sects. Its all there on the 'net...do your own research.
But to save you the bother, have a look at this :::

Just so that you are not confused any further about what my point is, its these Mormons that still practise polygamy, so please don't come back to me again and post stuff such as "I'm not entirely sure where some of the information you post here as fact(s) comes from" The evidence is there for everybody to see.
