Not sure. Would it br cheaper to send it by a carrier and can anyone use a carrier even if they dont have a commercial account?

anyone can use them, try looking on ebay for some rates for collection and delivery services.
big items are often cheaper by courrier.

Not sure if this the right place to post this. I have a heavy parcel to send to family.Would it be cheaper to send it by a carrier and can anyone use a carrier even if they dont have a commercial account?

Yes, anyone can use a carrier, you do not need a commercial account. Whether it will be cheaper? - you would have to get quotes.
Use Parcels2Go ..

I have used them a lot just to send eBay and some large stuff.
You just wrap it .. stick on the barcode after you printed it off .. and that's it.

It is cheaper by miles than running about top Post Offices .. taking to a centre, etc, etc.

Citylink £5.80 + vat
Yodel (DHL) £6.50 + vat
Hermes UK Economy £3.99 + vat.

I always use Yodel (DHL)
i missed the last posting date for the US and have just had to send xmas presents totalling about £50 for a cost of £60 postage :( it was dearer than Royal Mail but i had no other choice
Just register and store your home address as collection point.
You can track .. etc too.
You get emails to tell you collection confirmed. Just have parcel ready.
