I'm getting my hair done later in a salon (friend usually cuts it) and I don't know if it's still expected that you should tip the stylist if they do a good job.

Do you?

Yes, definitely.
No.

Eek!
You shouldn't "not" tip someone who is going to cut your hair again in a few weeks time.

You might come out looking like a loo brush.
Question Author
Ah, but I probably won't get them to do it again. Just desperate and my friend is mega under it so don't want to ask her. She'll probably do it again next time.
My previous hairdresser was a lovely girl but my hair cost a small fortune, we got on well as client and hairdresser should but I saw bugger all reason to give any more money. I am currently between hairdressers because I've moved, I went to one near my new place and I'm not sure how much I liked it so next month going to try another local one until I find one I do like.

I only really tip when I go out to eat and even then only if the meal and/or service is good. I don't really go in for this tipping lark.
I always Tip my Lady Hairdresser and have been going to the same Salon for about 15 Years, always polite and pleasant and cuts my Hair well !
LOL JJ !
My head looks like a Loo Brush after a No2 and No3 Cut, but a Posh one ! ;-)
Yes. I always tip at least 10% of the cost of the cut if they do a good job.
You should definately tip the apprentice or junior stylist that washes your hair.
I do about a fiver for the stylist and a couple of quid for the shampoo girl another fiver for the colourist

I'm very nervous China, since Toni and Guy butchered my hair a couple of years ago I only really trust my friend to do it properly.

Because of that I asked for them to give me the most senior stylist available and they are obviously charging me a fair bit more for that pleasure.

Up to an extra £15 Rowan!! They must love it when you make an appointment.
but the cut colours etc are usually well over £100 so its only about the same a the tip in a restaurant
Question Author
There's part of my mind though that says they're not paying anywhere near £100 to buy that colour in and it probably takes up to a couple of hours to do so in theory they are already charging a rate of about £40+ per hour. Not bad going.
I wouldn't tip a Toni and Guy hairdresser, they cost enough as it is. Although I probably wouldn't go to one either as I find them intimidating. It's difficult to find a good hairdresser, I had a terrible cut last year because my previous hairdresser was on holiday and I thought I would go to someone else... not sensible. Now I'm very cautious as I am trying new hairdressers so will not ask for anything too adventurous until I find one I feel completely happy with.

It will be hard to live up to previous hairdresser though who is wonderful, but I really can't afford another £189 for a cut, colour and blow dry no matter how nice it looks!
I'm usually in the salon at least 3 hours .... and when I've done a major change it has been as long as 6... .... been doing my own recently though and it looks ok but will have to get it done properly a few times next year

£189! Don't blame you for being reluctant to pay that again.

It is hard to find a hairdresser you trust to do a good job though. My hair still hasn't recovered from my T&G nightmare. I know what you mean about them being intimidating too. I would never go back to one of them.

I suppose if you feel it's worth it then you can tip them as much as you feel they deserve. Not sure about sitting on my bum for 6 hours though :)
i always tip, i´m usually done in 10 mins flat, cost is usually 7euros, 1 euro tip(14%), job done! : )
I've always tipped my hairdresser except one ages ago who cocked it up. As to finding a decent hairdresser who suits you, when I moved to the Brighton area I rented for six months first in a place a few miles from here before I bought in Hove. There were 4/5 hairdressers in the high street and I didn't know which to choose until I noticed a couple were advertising half price haircuts, another was nearly always empty. Then I noticed one was always busy and not cutting their prices. I still use them to this day.

7 euro! Lol, I'd probably tip an equal amount at that price.
