Has anyone ever used silk or any other kind of thermal underwear? Can you recommend any?

Yes, merino wool base layers are the best (for sporty things)

m & s do a range of thermal undies for men and women at very reasonable prices and in various materials and thicknesses. i'd recommend them.

I had to laugh when I was checking out all your advice and saw a bra in the 'thermal' sectoin.
I like Uniqlo's Heattech lines.
yes silk works very well - wore a silk bodysuit under skiclothing in the NE States and it worked brilliantly, unfortunately no brand as it was sourced directly from a factory near Hangzhou in China when I lived out there.....
I have purchased silk gloves (to be worn under other gloves) from Patra.com - never had a problem. For warmth we prefer pure wool, cannot beat it.
For everyday use I like the M&S thermal undies
