I'm a single parent - working full-time but still skint & wondering how I'm going to afford Xmas this year (again)! My washing machine recently broke and I had to get a new one. My boyfriend, who I don't live with, offered to buy me a new one but I said no because I didn't want to feel indebted to him, too proud I guess. Plus I also had a feeling he was trying to get back in my goods books to redeem himself for something he'd done recently which he knew upset me. My best friend says I should have accepted his offer and that I wouldn't have owed him anything but I'm not so sure. What do you think?

So sorry to hear about ur predicament....If it were going to make my child and me better off ...i would have accepted it. You have got to do whats best for you and your child. Read Victor Fankls "Mans search for Meaning" a story and an introduction to his logotherapy....in which he describes how he was able to survive the Nazi Extermination Camps by not allow them to take away his spirit....while others around perished....stay strong but roll with the punches and get urself back on your feet. ....Good Luck....
Why not ask him to get it for you for Xmas?! That way it is a gift, and you should not feel indebted to him. Or you could set up a direct debit and pay him a small amount a month, so that you are actually paying it off.

My Grandmother used to say it was as important to receive graciously as to give graciously.Accept the offer, you owe him nothing and it will ease things for you coming up to Christmas.

I think you did the right think abrakazabra, you don't need to feel indebted to someone and I know how that feels because my Mum does it to me. Always act on your instincts and you might be glad you did one day - most things do or don't happen for a good reason.
