Have you thought about buying The Glorious Book for Girls, it says on the cover that it is for girls from aged 8 to 80. I bought it for a friend's daughter's 8th birthday and it went down really well. Another great idea is books about horses or ponies, you could buy Black Beauty - good luck!

What about bead making things - more 'grown up' beads for the 8 year old ( large selection at the Range or Hobby Craft) or Hama Beads they keep kids quiet for ages and are now available in three sizes so they would be suitable for both ages (good range at hobbycraft or Toys R us)
