Does a cuckoo mean it's summer, or spring?

Unsure of 1st day of spring...but that's when birds begin their mating and nesting. Too early for the cuckoos work! So it has to be start of summer for the cuckoo to cuckoold (ie Chas & Camy nikers)......wicked, I know! tee hee

My god they sing late in Bucks!
We (in East Sussex) heard one in the first week in May.
Maybe ours are French cuckoos blown across the channe(France is only 20 miles away)l?LOL
We do have spoonbills and little egrets in the Rye Bird Reserve(6 miles away).

I live in Bucks and there is a cuckoo outside my house somewhere - it has been cuckooing for several weeks! Since the first bit of good weather I think. Had not heard one for years until now!
