Picture of a robin on a christmas card

Hi I was in college the other day and we were talking about festivals. One of the women in my group said that she once sent a christmas card to someone with a picture of a robin on it and they sent it back to her as they said it was rude to send it with a robin on. Another women said that she had heard it too. My tutor aint got a clue what they were on about as she has never heard of this before. Just wondered if it is true and if so why?

From Wiki:

"An old English folk tale seeks to explain the Robin's distinctive red breast. Legend has it that when Jesus was dying on the cross, the Robin, then simply brown in colour, flew to his side and sang into his ear in order to comfort him in his pain. The blood from his wounds stained the Robin's breast, and thereafter all Robins got the mark of Christ's blood upon them."

Don't know if that is why they object to the Robin though.

I once received a Christmas card with the following verse;

Noel, Noel, the Christmas Robin cried
As he the Infant Babe espied
Santa said "Enough of that"
And with a Yule log squashed him flat.

If they were ignorant enough to return a card in the first place - I imagine they'd be too "ignorant" to get the point of the little dig.

There is a superstition that it's unlucky to have anything in the house with birds on...maybe that's it

I've never heard of that one ...
I once had a card from my son with a robin sitting on a toilet...inside it said 'I asked the assistant for a Robin on a log' :o)
