European holiday destinations busy this year?

I was wondering if anyone had noticed whether the usual holiday hotspots in Europe were any less busy this year due to the recession? My boyfriend and I usually go to the Algarve in September, however holiday conflicts at work mean we have to go on the 26th August instead. We usually avoid August like the plague because it's crowded and noisy. However with the increase in number of people holidaying in the UK, has it made a difference at all? Also have most of the families (and their noisy little angels) gone home by this late in August?

Hi Jem_Bob
We own a timeshare in Gran Canaria as does a friend of ours. She went a couple of weeks ago and said the place was empty, compared to other years. Even the resort was very quiet. She assumed it was the Credit crunch and the poor exchage rate on the euro.

Same as the answer above, friends of mine have been to the Balearic Islands and said the apartment block was half empty!

Thanks to both of you. This sounds promising! Yeah, I can tell the poor exchange rate is going to be a bit of an issue! And I think the Algarve is notoriously more expensive than other places, but we just love it there. I'll keep my fingers crossed and I'm sure we'll enjoy getting away whether it's busy or not!

Thanks again.
