If you mean producing an ecosystem, it's vital for life on this planet! The remaining rain forests provide the best ecosystem on earth, and without it, everything'd unbalance. Animals, insects and human beings are losing their natural habitat as trees are felled, so the food chain gets hampered. Vital sources of medication are harvested from the many plants and trees which grow there. The vast areas of remaining forest give out oxygen, and once the land decays, there's no quick way of turning the damage around.
According to wikianswers (where someone asked the same question so I guess it's coursework):

"Producers are things such as plants that are fed off of but do not eat other producers or organisms. ". So they are food.

Another site says:

The living organisms in an ecosystem can be divided into three categories: producers, consumers and decomposers. They are all important parts of an ecosystem. Producers are the green plants. They make their own food.
