Natural Log

Can somebody tell me please why the 'Natural Log' button on my calculator is marked LN and not NL? Is it perhaps French as in 'Logarithm Naturelle' or somesuch?

Actually its latin "logarithmus naturalis", as the early mathematcians (Mercator, Newton etc) wrote their manuscripts in latin.

Ah yes, should have thought that it might be Latin - obviously I am not a 'proper' mathematician yet! Thank you very much, sddsddean.
