When the Sanger Centre completed the complete structure of human DNA did it read each letter or nucleotide or was it only concerned with the consecutive triplets in the chain?

The reason I am asking is that I have read recently there were overlapping genes found in the structure so remarkably there are genes within genes and depending where in the triplet the start codom of ATG is read gives additional genes.
ie cag gat ATG ttt ttA TGc aaa etc

This would enable many more genes and would be partly useless not to have considered these. The structure of the bacteriphage Phi X 174 were known to have them so is not a new phenonenom.
