In meiosis, crossing over is the exchange of genetic material between maternal and paternal chromosomes.

Crossing-over results in a random redistribution of genes and ensures that the combinations of genes in each sperm or egg differs from the combinations in the cells of the parents. This increases the genetic diversity of the gametes and therefore, that of the species population.
