Pi bonding in Carbon-Carbon double bonds

Do the Pi electrons forming the second bond of a double bond between two Carbon atoms interact in two layers, one above and one below the sigma bond as shown in text book diagrams; or are they just shown this way since the drawing has to be in two dimensions but they actually form a "tube" around the sigma bond?

No, pretty much as they are in the textbooks, but in 3D of course (sort of like tear drops); the wavefunctions will drop off towards the sigma bonds.
I should clarify that the 'p' electrons are like toruses, i.e., ring donuts, and the 's' electrons are more like spheres.
fo3nix, electrons don't have a shape - did you mean p and s orbitals.
