Expanding Pages

Why is that that on some sites I can't expand the pages for a better view? This is on a Nexus tablet, and probably affects about 5% of sites I look at. Not a huge amount,but quite annoying to my older eyes.

Facebook doesn't expand on my tablet.

I don't use FB,but have had it happen on some news sites and blogs.
I've just noticed that I asked the same Q three years ago...lol!
But it's not specifically text as referred to by jomlett in his answer...it's the whole page.
