I am seriously thinking of getting one (second hand, 'W' or 'X' plate). Has anyone got one / had one? Are they any good? Is there anything I need to look out for when browsing used examples?

If you like what I call, "the V-tec effect" then they are terrific! Very good value on a performance per pound basis, plus Honda build quality and reliability, and a roomy hatch body into the bargain! Having said all that, I wouldnt want one, the trouble with V-tec engines is that unless you are really,"going for it", they are not that special, 200bhp is fine, but matched to only 145lbft of torque, it means you have to work the engine hard all the time to make it fun. Thats great when you are in the mood, but can be hard work and noisy when your not. On a rapid cross country drive  something like a Leon Cupra R (or dare I say it, an Impreza Turbo!), will show the Honda a clean pair of heels, due to their more muscular mid-ranges and the Hondas rather skittish ride quality over anything but smooth roads. In a straight line the Civic is a winner, but its too compromised for my tastes. Also I gather they get through front tyres at an alarming rate!

Thanks for the answer Impret-Sir. I'm guessing by your username you are an avid fan of Subaru! You point about tyres worries me, as I do around 25K per annum, so I think my local Quick Fit may start to like me. However, I like the sound of the VTEC, as surely even driving normally, the Type-R is no slouch?

Please note it's the Accord Type-R I'm looking at rather than the Civic, as I have a small family, and I'm led to beleive it's a suitable sports car for the family man.

Hi BigDog, yeah, sorry bout that slip, but the comments apply to the Accord just as much as the Civic. Certainly the car is not slow in normal driving, its just that the real fun only begins when the revs rise and when its off cam its all rather ordinary. Its just that for me, Id take torque over BHP every time, and I consider midrange power to be more important than top end, for example, I have never actually discoverd what my Scoobs top speed is, but I know very well how quickly I can overtake stuff, and how fast it goes round corners!
just go and buy one they are indistrucable as long as you buy properly my son bought one 10 months ago from cheltenham we live in the north of england and i drove it back i now want one they are just simply a brilliant car/roomy/comfortable/(recaro seats)economical on fuel/built to last/the eye candy love em. says it all
