I assume untreated skin would decompose, certainly any 'dead skin' I shed doesn't look rubbery

The skin would be tanned so as to become leather I presume. Many kinds of skin are made into leather such as turkey skin for cowboy boots and fish skin is also used .

Yes, I thought it must be tanned but no mention of that in the report.
