They are wanting to build a Muslim cultural centre in that building, only part of it will be a mosque, the rest of it will be conference centres, restaurants, etc. As President Obama said publicly yesterday, the US is not at war with the Muslim faith, the 9-11 atrocities were undertaken by Al Quaeda who are a small extremist group of people, they are not the same as the Muslim rank and file. I don't have strong feelings either way, but there are thousands of Muslims in the US and they can't all be tarred with the same brush. I understand the sensitivities, but just how far away from Ground Zero would the objectors find this new Centre acceptable? A properly organised and managed Centre with mosque would be far less likely to fuel insurgency that a back-room meeting room where nobody is keeping an eye on activities. The US will never forget and probably most will never forgive, but there is a huge peaceable Muslim presence in the US who need facilities to meet and pray - they have to do it somewhere. This may not be 100% the right place, but where would be? It would be a great step in the right direction to say we are nine years on, what's done is done, let's try to understand each other and try to avoid anything as dreadful as this ever happening again.
