difficult one, because a sound is a creek, and a creaking sound is grating!

Good luck

Thanks writesbad, one can only try and try again.
I disagree,creak is a sound.Not creek.
Dear Catgirl4

Please be friends and let's not disagree
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_(geography) -
A "sound" is also an inlet from the sea, like a creek
xx
Good point writesbad, I hadn't spotted that meaning myself.
Thanks, BT. Isn't the English language wonderful?
Someone told me once that it's a nightmare to learn, with different meanings and different pronunciations for the same letter combos (e.g. cough, bough, nought... etc)!
thanks for jogging my old memory, Boxtops. I remember a teacher telling us how foreigners find English hard to learn. He quoted the famous lines ...with a quirky change "Underneath the mistletoe bough (buff)
Stands a boy with a hacking cough (cow)"
...with the wrong pronunciations, gives a completely different picture!
I would go for creak. Grating sound = creak, which sounds like creek which is a sound.
haven't heard back from CatGirl4 yet....
...but if JMR27 agrees, it must me right
none of this waffle answers the question!
sorry for wittering on, Margaretta. The answer must be "creak"
As 11a is "emmental" that gives the "A" as the 4th letter of 6d, therefore it must be "creak"
I agree with writesbad, and think that the answer is "creak".

You need to split up the clue like this: first find a meaning for "grating sound", which is "creak". The second occurrence of the word "sound" is telling us that "creak" sounds like (or is a homophone for) the one of the meanings of the third occurrence of "sound",
which is "creek".

Best wishes, Rosie
As a musician, "sound sound sound" and the letters _r_a_ fit TRIAD, a three note chord.
But I guess CREAK is right with this dodgy (copyright Norman Vaughan!!!) clue.
