Can't delete progs in Download file

I record progs from UKN and up til now it's been fine but now when I want to clear my downloads (I'm on XP) it says there is an error and it closes the whole system down, it's getting very annoying, and am getting lots of stored progs which I do not want anymore, how can I sort it. Have rebooted many times due to this problem, thank you in advance.
