thanks, squarebear, that's also what I would have said.
Watching a quiz show tonight, was amazed when that answer was ruled incorrect - think they need to check their sources
2 !!
1 is NOT a prime number as it has only one factor. prime numbers have just two factors, 1 and the number itself.
1 is only divisible by itself and 1, so 1 is a prime number.

I thought that 3 was the next prime number
I must admit I would have said 1, but just put in 'prime number definition' into google and every site says the same as ken's answer, so looks like the correct answer is 2.
1,2,3,5,7,11 and so on.
1 used to be considered a prime, but the rules changed! See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_number

thanks everyone
sure makes me feel old, all this changing, countries

Hi seekeerz!
The set of prime numbers has always excluded the number 1.
If 1 were included then there would be NO prime numbers, because 1 is a factor of every whole number.
So any consideration of primes begins with the number 2.
Take care and have a happy Christmas.
